The LX-2 does two great things. It splits a line level audio signal and can adjust the level when required. Inside, there's a top-notch Jensen transformer that gives amazing frequency response and phase coherency, keeping the audio quality super high. It also separates the two outputs to get rid of hum and buzz from ground loops. If you need to adjust the level, the trim control on the LX-2 lets you tone down overly strong signals. This means you can really drive your mic preamps to get that special sound, while making sure the recording interface doesn't get clipped. The trim control is activated by a recessed 'Set & Forget' switch. If you don't need attenuation, just turn off the switch to avoid accidental level changes.
